13th Annual General Meeting
The Tanzania
Bankers Association (TBA) held its 13th Annual General
Meeting
on 10th
December 2009 at the
Kilimanjaro Kempinski Hotel,
Dar es Salaam, followed by a Cocktail at the Kibo Ballroom.
The AGM
re-elected the office bearers finishing their 2-years term
to serve again for another 2 years term. Ben Christiaanse,
was re-elected the Association's Chairman; Charles G.
Singili, re-elected as the Vice Chairman, while Iddi B.
Msonga will continue to serve as the Honorary Treasurer of
the Association. Members also approved the Association's Activity Plan and the Income
and Expenditure Budget for the year 2010, and
based on
their confidence to the firm, once again, TBA
re-appointed KPMG as the Association's auditors.
Closing the Association’s 13th Annual General Meeting, the
Chairman, Mr. Ben Christiaanse thanked members for the trust
they have given him and other office bearers to lead the
Association for another two years. He also commended the Executive
Director and the Secretariat for the job well done and
wished all members a Happy New Year 2010.
After the
meeting, members of the Association together with committee
members gathered at the Kibo room for a "Drink" to close the
Year 2009 and welcome 2010 at which the Chairman briefed the
audience on the Association's success and challenges during
the year ended and the priorities for the Year 2010. Invited
were also officials from the Bank of Tanzania.

Launching of Mortgage Finance
and Unit Titles Regulations, 2008 and Public awareness Campaign
Hon. John
Z. Chiligati, Minister for Lands, Housing and Settlements
has recently launched Mortgage Finance and Unit Titles
Regulations together with a Public awareness campaign
for the same.
The event was
witnessed by hundreds of stakeholders including Heads of
Financial Institutions, Housing Associations, Lawyers,
Government Officials and the Press.
The Regulations
are aimed to ease the obstacles which existed in the yester
years where banks feared to have mortgage finance as a bank
product due to unfavorable environments that existed in the event of loan
defaults.
At the closing of
his speech, Hon. Chiligati urged every stakeholder in the
housing business to play their part to ensure better
settlements for every Tanzanian.

In-house Lawyers social
evening
TBA In-house
Lawyers, recently had a get-together evening held at the
summit of the RedOnion Restaurant located at Haidery Plaza.
The idea for the event was to create a closer network
between in-house lawyers and for a while, forget about the
"... in the case of X vs Y" language... and
indeed, everybody was happy!

AML/Compliance
Workshop
The Tanzania
Bankers Association (TBA) organized a half-day Workshop on
Anti-Money Laundering. The Workshop which was held on 17th
March 2009 at the Kilimanjaro Kempinski Hotel, Dar es Salaam
was attended by Twenty nine Anti-Money Laundering and
Compliance Officers from 22 member banks.
The purpose of
this Workshop was to review AML Regulations, 2007 and come
up with comments and recommendations aimed at improving the
said Regulations for implementation. The Workshop was
coordinated by Julius Mukoji (NBC) and Ms. Nina Eshun
(Standard Chartered).

12th Annual General Meeting
The Tanzania
Bankers Association (TBA) held its 12th Annual General
Meeting
on 2nd
December 2008 at the
Kilimanjaro Kempinski Hotel,
Dar es Salaam.
In his
opening remarks, the Chairman thanked Hemen Shah, the former
MD of Standard Chartered Bank for his active participation
in the affairs of the Association during his stay in
Tanzania and welcomed his successor, Jeremy Awori.
The AGM
also approved the Association's Activity Plan and the Income
and Expenditure Budget for the year 2009, and
based on
their confidence to the firm, TBA
re-appointed KPMG as the Association's auditors.
Closing the Association’s 12th Annual General Meeting, the
Chairman, Mr. Ben Christiaanse thanked the Executive
Director and the Secretariat for the job well done and
wished all members a Happy New Year 2009.
The Association’s membership has now grown up to 30 members.

Cocktail, May 2008
The
Tanzania Bankers Association (TBA) last month held a
Cocktail at the Mövenpick Royal Palm Hotel, Dar es Salaam as
part of its Public Relations activities. This function
enabled heads of TBA member banks to network with their
regulators and stakeholders. The event was graced by the
Deputy Minister for Finance and Economic Affairs Hon. Omar Yussuf Mzee.
About 90
guests attended the event. They included: Government
officials, Governor, Deputy Governors and Directors of the
Bank of Tanzania, IMF representative, Chairpersons and
Managing Directors of the
member banks, members of the Tanzania Private Sector
Foundation and members of Press.

Ben Christiaanse Elected the New
Chairman of the Tanzania Bankers Association (TBA)
Mr
Christiaanse succeeds Mayank Malik of Citibank, who
completed his tour to Tanzania a few months ago.
According to a statement by the TBA Secretariat, Mr
Christiaanse, who is the Chief Executive Officer of the
National Microfinance Bank, will chair the Association for a
period of two years.
The Association, comprising 30 banks and financial
institutions licensed by the Bank of Tanzania to engage in
banking business in Tanzania, held its 11th Annual General
Meeting (AGM) at the MövenPick Royal Palm Hotel in Dar es
Salaam early December 2007.
Mr Christiaanse has more than 35 years of banking experience
which he will bring to the Association.
The statement also published that Mr Charles Singili, the
Managing Director of Azania Bank, was re-elected
Vice-Chairman for another term of two years, and Mr Iddi
Msonga, Financial Controller of Citibank also retained his
position as Honorary Treasurer.
Mr Christiaanse expressed his gratitude to all members of
the AGM for having shown trust in him and promised to work
hand in glove with all stakeholders, particularly the
regulators, to achieve the Association's objectives.
The National Bank of Commerce, CRDB, Standard Chartered,
Citibank, FBME, African Banking Corporation, Bank of Baroda
and KCB were elected as Executive Committee members.
The Executive Committee is one of the four principal organs
responsible for supervising the activities of the
Association on behalf of the members.
The AGM has also approved the Association's Activity Plan
and the Income and Expenditure Budget for the year 2008, and
has reappointed KPMG as the Association's auditors.

TBA bid farewell
to Mayank Malik
A few days
after the superb dinner with the President; TBA had to bid
farewell to Mr. Mayank Malik, former TBA Chairman and CEO of
Citibank Tanzania who was transferred to Bahrain.
Speaking
during the cocktail organized by TBA to bid him farewell,
Mayank Malik urged bankers to develop a closer working
relationship with the Government in order to reach their
targets set for this year as such relationship would enable
both the Government and the banks to move their issues
faster since they depend on each other in one way or
another.
"All the
notable successes we have achieved todate is a result of the
good working relationship between TBA and the Government
especially the Bank of Tanzania which has been providing
requisite support, said Malik.
Mayank was
elected TBA Chairman in December 2003. TBA Secretariat on
behalf of all members thanked Mayank for his valuable
contribution during his tenure and wished him all the best
in his new post.

TBA held Dinner in
Honour of H. E. Jakaya M. Kikwete
Recently, the Tanzania Bankers
Association organized a successful dinner of its kind,
an event
which was graced by The President of The United Republic of
Tanzania H. E. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete.
The event which
was held at the Kilimanjaro Kempinski Hotel, Dar es Salaam
was well attended with almost 200 guests including
Government Officials, Representative from the World Bank and IMF,
Ambassadors, the Banking community and the Business
community.
Mayank Malik,
former TBA Chairman enlighten the President on the banking
sector activities under the umbrella of TBA and the
initiatives taken to speed up the growth of the Economy in Tanzania as a group or as individual banks; though there are
obstacles that needs Government’s intervention.
The President
thanked the financial sector for their contribution in
speeding up the economy growth in the Country. However, a
number of challenges to the banking sector were raised in
his address that needs to be put into action.
